Senior Dog Finds New Home at West Warwick Police Department
West Warwick, RI – A senior dog named Mouse has found an unexpected new home at the West Warwick Police Department after being discovered abandoned in February. The dog, a 10-year-old pit bull mix, was emaciated and showed signs of neglect when she was brought to the shelter by a concerned resident.
Animal Control Officer Elsie Curtis noticed Mouse’s gentle demeanor and took her to a vet, where she received a dire cancer diagnosis. Initially recommended for euthanasia, Curtis and Police Chief Ernest Lavigne chose to give Mouse more time, leading to daily walks and increasing affection from the team.
A collaborative effort with local veterinarian Dr. Kim Nelson allowed Mouse to start chemotherapy treatments, which have visibly improved her well-being. Lavigne emphasized the importance of creating a loving environment, stating, "We’re going to do everything we can to make the rest of this dog’s life the best."
Mouse now roams freely within the police department and is undergoing training to become a therapy dog, brightening the spirits of both officers and community members alike. Recently recognized at a Town Council meeting, she is set to be sworn in as an official member of the department, embodying the theme of second chances.
