If you’re seeking a low-maintenance, attractive ground cover for those challenging shady spots in your garden, look no further than Allegheny spurge (Pachysandra procumbens). Andrey Likhman, owner of Vandeck Builders, champions Pachysandra as an effective alternative to grass, particularly for shaded regions where grass struggles. "It suppresses weeds, is drought-tolerant once established, and is deer-resistant," he notes, emphasizing its appeal for both aesthetics and functionality. However, Likhman cautions that while it isn’t considered highly invasive, it can spread aggressively in optimal conditions, necessitating boundary control in smaller gardens.
When considering coverage, Likhman recommends using Pachysandra selectively for shaded pathways and around trees rather than blanket coverage across your yard. To successfully transition from grass, he advises removing existing turf, amending soil, and planting rooted cuttings or plugs 6 to 12 inches apart, with mulch to retain moisture.
For added variety, the ‘Silver Streak’ cultivar features striking leaves mottled with silvery-white, and companion plants like maidenhair ferns and oakleaf hydrangeas can harmonize beautifully. While Pachysandra requires minimal maintenance—thriving in partial to full shade and well-drained soil—Likhman also suggests alternatives for sunnier areas. Creeping Jenny and Mazus reptans (now known as Mazus miquelii) offer vibrant coverage but should be approached cautiously due to their invasive potential in some regions. For drought-resilient sunny spots, creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is an excellent choice.
