Press Release: Jury Rules Against Whistleblower in Controversial School Case
In a recent verdict from Kent County Superior Court, a jury unanimously rejected the whistleblower claims of former theology teacher Michael Marsocci against three administrators at Bishop Hendricken High School. Following a two-week trial, the jury deliberated for five hours before delivering its decision, which resulted in Marsocci being ordered to pay significant compensatory and punitive damages to the former principal, Joseph Brennan, former assistant principal David Flanagan, and former president John A. Jackson.
Marsocci was terminated in May 2017 after creating a controversial website, Hawk Outsider, which alleged that school administrators had failed to properly investigate a fellow teacher accused of inappropriate sexual communications. The website displayed sensitive materials, including secretly recorded videos and screenshots of lewd emails. During the trial, Marsocci claimed he was acting in the interest of students when he exposed the alleged misconduct. However, Brennan defended his administration’s actions, stating that they could not substantiate the claims due to a lack of evidence.
Following the verdict, a visibly relieved Brennan expressed gratitude, saying, “I feel as though justice has been served.” His legal team emphasized that the trio had acted responsibly and assertively for the safety of students. In stark contrast, Marsocci, who has struggled to find work since his termination and now faces financial hardship, accused the school and church of attempting to destroy his career.
The case highlights the tensions between whistleblower protections and school administrative responsibilities, underlining the complex dynamics within educational institutions. As of now, Marsocci remains resolute in his belief that he was wronged and that vital issues concerning student safety were ignored.
