Iran Executes Nine ISIL Members for Terrorism
TEHRAN— Iran has executed nine members of the ISIL (ISIS) militant group who were convicted for plotting terror attacks against civilians. The executions, confirmed by the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan News Agency, were carried out following a Supreme Court decision. The men had been in custody since their 2018 arrest during a violent confrontation with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an incident that resulted in the deaths of several individuals.
Key charges against the group included waging war against God, terrorism, and illegal possession of military weapons. Authorities reported that a stash of weapons was seized from their base at the time of arrest. General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the IRGC ground forces, stated that the terrorist cell aimed to infiltrate Iran to execute simultaneous attacks in both border and major cities. The clash resulted in the loss of three Iranian soldiers, as some ISIL fighters detonated suicide vests during the operation.
ISIL, which previously controlled vast territories in Iraq and Syria, has continued to orchestrate sporadic attacks even after being significantly weakened by a U.S.-led military campaign. Notably, the group claimed responsibility for a bomb attack in January that targeted a memorial for assassinated Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, which killed over 90 people.
Iran remains vigilant against ISIL’s aspirations, frequently announcing arrests of suspected members. Just this past week, 13 alleged militants were detained in nationwide raids. Amnesty International reported that Iran executed at least 972 people in 2022, only trailing China in the number of executions globally.
