Press Release: Dorsey Appointed to U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Rhode Island
PROVIDENCE, RI—Attorney John Dorsey has been appointed as the newest member of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Rhode Island, a decision praised for his extensive experience in receiverships and distressed asset management. Chief Judge Barron expressed confidence in Dorsey’s capability to serve effectively, emphasizing his robust ties to the Rhode Island community and his commitment to fairness and respect in justice.
In a statement, Dorsey acknowledged the honor and responsibility of his new role, pledging to make the court accessible to both individuals and businesses. He intends to build upon the foundational work of his predecessor, Judge Finkle, whose service was recognized and appreciated by Barron.
Dorsey’s transition to the bench means stepping down from his responsibilities as a court-appointed receiver for Providence Place, Rhode Island’s largest shopping mall, which entered receivership in 2024 due to significant financial distress. Alongside his law partner, W. Mark Russo, Dorsey implemented measures for the mall, including a controversial security plan and revised parking rates based on community feedback.
Throughout his career, Dorsey has focused on civil litigation and has been frequently appointed in various capacities, including as special master and commissioner. Since joining Ferrucci Russo Dorsey in 2010, he has participated in multiple facets of law including business litigation and real estate. His contributions extend beyond legal matters; he played a key role in developing the COVID-19 Business Recovery Program, aiding businesses navigate pandemic challenges.
As Dorsey assumes his new judicial position, he carries the experiences and aspirations of the Rhode Island community, ensuring justice is served with humanity in a court that handled nearly 1,000 bankruptcy cases last year.
