Rhode Island Bill Aims to Bury Power Lines in Popular Parks
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A bill to bury power lines at India Point Park and Bold Point Park is advancing to the State Senate after gaining approval in the House. Lawmakers have championed this initiative for years, viewing it as essential for the future development of both parks.
Local residents express mixed feelings about the proposed change. Some cite safety concerns and the unsightly nature of the overhead lines, while others worry about the project’s financial implications. If the bill is enacted, funding would primarily arise from a settlement with the Narragansett Electric Company, while taxpayers would contribute an estimated $32 from East Providence residents and $77 from those in Providence.
A spokesperson for Rhode Island Energy indicated that the company will support the bill’s implementation if it becomes law, although they did not take a formal position during the legislative process.
As this proposal makes its way to the Senate, it reignites a long-standing debate about the power lines’ visual and safety impact in the community. The outcome has the potential to reshape the park experience for both current and future generations.
