Rhode Island Edges Bonnies in Thrilling Finish
Kingston, R.I. – February 15, 2025
In a dramatic showdown at the Ryan Center, the Rhode Island Rams overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 68-64, Wednesday night. Jamarques Lawrence’s pivotal four-point play capped a remarkable 13-point rally for the Rams, sealing their victory.
The Bonnies (17-9, 5-8 A-10) started strong, showcasing a potent offense that led to a 37-25 halftime advantage. They shot 50% from the field in the first half, capitalizing on two 8-0 runs. However, the second half saw a stark reversal, with SBU managing only 29% shooting throughout and allowing the Rams to claw back into contention.
As the clock ticked down, a crucial three-pointer from David Green propelled the Rams (16-8, 5-7 A-10) into a 60-59 lead—their first since the game’s onset. The Bonnies briefly regained supremacy thanks to Melvin Council Jr.’s timely three-pointer and free throws. Nevertheless, a missed layup in the final moments allowed Lawrence to hit a decisive three, followed by a successful free throw after a turnover by the Bonnies.
Leading the scoring for SBU was Jonah Hinton with 18 points, while Council contributed 16. For the Rams, Lawrence finished with 20 points, backed by Green (18 points) and Sebastian Thomas (15 points).
Head Coach Mark Schmidt reflected on the game, emphasizing the need for better defensive execution in critical moments. “Proud of the effort, but we have to close games better,” he stated.
The Bonnies now prepare for their next challenge against Massachusetts on Saturday at noon.
