URI Student-Athletes Recognized at Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony
Providence, R.I. – The University of Rhode Island (URI) celebrated the accomplishments of ten outstanding student-athletes during the annual Scholar-Athlete Awards at the R.I. State House Monday. The event honored not only current athletes but also notable alumni, including Pete Sherman, a distinguished track and field alumnus, and renowned radio announcer Steve McDonald.
The URI honorees included:
- Hannah Benavides (Women’s Swimming & Diving): A Nursing major with a 3.77 GPA, Benavides stood out by breaking school records and achieving top placements in the Atlantic 10 Championships.
- Anaelle Dutat (Women’s Basketball): With a 3.52 GPA, the Biomedical Engineering major has made a significant impact on the court, earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team.
- Sydney Federico (Women’s Track & Field): Leading her team to victory at the New England Indoor Championship, Federico boasts a GPA of 3.18 and multiple athletic accolades.
- Greg Gaines III (Football): A key player in URI’s historic championship-winning football team, he also maintains a GPA of 3.22.
- Jason Morrill (Men’s Soccer): The Finance major has been instrumental in defense for the soccer team, achieving a 3.91 GPA.
- Klara Nelander (Women’s Tennis): With a perfect GPA of 4.00, this Finance major is a star captain driving her team toward success.
- Braeden Perry (Baseball): An integral member of a championship-contending baseball team, Perry has a 3.72 GPA and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.
- Casey Phelps (Women’s Lacrosse): As a key player in URI’s inaugural NCAA Division I season, Phelps excels academically with a 4.00 GPA.
- Josiah Tong (Men’s Golf): A Management major with a 4.0 GPA, Tong has played a significant role in the team’s achievements this season.
- Jarrett Young (Men’s Track & Field): With a 3.35 GPA, Young leads URI’s successful track team and holds multiple program records.
Additionally, alumni Pete Sherman received the Distinguished Alumni Award for his contributions to both URI Athletics and the community, while Steve McDonald was honored with the K. Joseph Shekarchi Award for his legendary broadcasting career. The event celebrated the dedication and excellence of URI’s student-athletes both academically and athletically.
