Leadership Changes Across Rhode Island Schools: A Week of Transitions
Rhode Island’s educational landscape is undergoing significant leadership changes as several districts announce new superintendents and navigate challenging transitions.
In Warwick, the School Committee swiftly appointed William McCaffrey as the new superintendent, commencing this July, following Lynn Dambruch’s retirement. McCaffrey, a long-time educator and administrator within the district, is anticipated to bring stability to Warwick’s leadership.
Pawtucket faces turmoil after Superintendent Patricia Royal went on leave amidst a lawsuit against the school committee and mayor. Randy Buck is currently serving as interim superintendent, but uncertainty looms over when a permanent successor will be appointed.
Meanwhile, East Greenwich is searching for a new district leader following the ousting of Superintendent Brian Ricca, who faced a vote of no confidence from the teachers’ union. Alexis Meyer has stepped in as interim superintendent during this transitional phase.
In Lincoln, Kevin McNamara has been named to succeed Superintendent Lawrence Filippelli, who is leaving for Woodstock Academy in Connecticut. McNamara’s promotion is seen as a continuation of service, as he has been part of the district since 1999.
Tiverton is exploring external candidates for Superintendent Peter Sanchioni’s upcoming retirement, with three finalists named: Laryssa M. Doherty, Christopher J. Haskins, and Michael Whaley.
Johnston is also in search of a new leader following long-time Superintendent Bernard DiLullo’s retirement. The district is implementing a hybrid elected/appointed school committee amid financial pressures, prompting Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. to announce a $5.4 million bailout.
As districts navigate these changes, the focus remains on ensuring leadership continuity and addressing the unique challenges each community faces.
