Massachusetts Attorney Sentenced for Smuggling Contraband into Detention Center
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — In a recent case highlighting security breaches within detention facilities, a Massachusetts attorney has been sentenced for her role in a contraband smuggling scheme at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Center in Rhode Island. Theresa Marie DiJoseph, 51, faced charges including possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance analogue and conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom, DiJoseph conspired to transport K2, a synthetic marijuana, to inmate Shawn Hart. The contraband, consisting of ten papers soaked in K2, was intercepted by authorities on December 1, 2023, and subsequently tested by the FBI. DiJoseph was arrested in July 2024 and has since admitted to her involvement in the scheme.
As part of her sentencing, DiJoseph received three years of probation, with the first six months to be spent in home confinement monitored by GPS, along with a requirement to complete 100 hours of community service. This case serves as a reminder of ongoing efforts to maintain safety and security within detention facilities.
