Guatemalan National Indicted Following Injury to Homeland Security Agent

Providence, R.I. — A federal grand jury has indicted 28-year-old Miguel Tamup-Tamup, a Guatemalan national, after a serious incident involving a Homeland Security agent during his attempted arrest in April. Tamup-Tamup, who is in the U.S. illegally after previous deportation, faces two counts of assaulting and resisting federal officers, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

On April 19, Tamup-Tamup was arrested for driving under the influence after a collision, but was subsequently released. Authorities later discovered his illegal status through fingerprint records during a traffic stop on April 30. As agents approached to execute an arrest warrant, he resisted, allegedly injuring a Homeland Security agent in the process. The agent suffered a serious leg injury as Tamup-Tamup fled the scene.

Federal authorities apprehended him on May 16 in Providence, where he has since remained in custody. The condition of the injured agent remains unclear. This case highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing immigration laws and public safety. Updates will follow as the situation develops.
