Ed McGuirl: A Journey of Education and Music Ends with Graduation
JAMESTOWN, RI – Nearly three decades after first enrolling at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), 76-year-old Ed McGuirl is set to graduate with the class of 2025. McGuirl began his studies in the mid-1990s, aiming for a degree in social services to aid his work in substance-abuse treatment. However, a demanding work schedule forced him to pause his education indefinitely.
Inspired by family members with degrees, McGuirl reached out to CCRI ahead of the 2025 spring semester, discovering he was just 10 credits shy of graduation. With encouragement from his wife, he quickly enrolled in courses in French, geology, and math. "It’s great; it’s really satisfying," McGuirl remarked about returning to school, expressing enjoyment in learning something new.
Outside the classroom, McGuirl has led a multifaceted life as a licensed chemical-dependency professional, commercial fisherman, and licensed boat captain, all while nurturing his passion for music. A seasoned musician, he has performed across New England and is gearing up for summer gigs in various Rhode Island towns.
With graduation just around the corner, McGuirl eagerly anticipates walking across the stage, marking a significant milestone in a remarkable journey.
