North Providence Faces Lawsuit Over Allegations of Misconduct in Public Works
A lawsuit filed by former town employee Mike Charbatji has stirred controversy in North Providence after he claimed he was unlawfully terminated following his distressing experiences while working under Mayor Charles Lombardi and Town Administrator Fuoroli. Charbatji alleges he was repeatedly coerced into conducting personal work for Lombardi during his official hours, raising concerns of potential legal violations.
The suit, initiated after Charbatji’s attorney sent a demand letter to the town’s finance department last December, accuses Lombardi and Fuoroli of directing him to perform tasks on multiple properties, including Lombardi’s summer home and commercial real estate that supports the mayor’s personal business. Charbatji asserts that these activities occurred frequently during his work hours and that Fuoroli facilitated timecard manipulation to cover up the alleged misconduct.
Charbatji, who initially joined the town’s public buildings department in 2017 after being promised substantial overtime and benefits, claims he faced increasing pressure to prioritize the mayor’s personal projects over his official responsibilities. The situation reportedly escalated when Charbatji sought a pay raise, leading him to confront Lombardi about his discomfort with the arrangement. Following a period of medical leave for chest pains, he learned of his termination due to "unauthorized and unexcused leave."
Despite the serious allegations, Lombardi has remained tight-lipped. He has confirmed the issue has been referred to the town’s insurance company while hiring prominent legal representation. The community awaits further developments as the case unfolds.
