Innovative Lithuanians Pioneering AI-Generated Enzymes Win European Patent Office Young Inventors Prize

A trio of Lithuanian innovators has made headlines by transforming enzyme design through artificial intelligence. Laurynas Karpus, Vykintas Jauniškis, and Irmantas Rokaitis, all under 30, have created the Intelligent Architecture™ platform via their company, Biomatter. This groundbreaking tool bypasses traditional methods by generating custom enzymes from scratch, which earned them recognition as one of the top ten Tomorrow Shapers in the European Patent Office’s 2025 Young Inventors Prize.
Conventional enzyme design often relies on nature’s existing templates, but the Biomatter team aims to redefine this approach. Their platform integrates machine learning, physics-based modeling, and experimental testing to produce tailored biological tools for diverse applications, from drug development to green chemistry. "We are unlocking a key bottleneck in solving health and sustainability problems in the 21st century," they stated.
The founders began their innovative journey in 2017 at the Institute of Biotechnology at Vilnius University, where they developed initial AI models. Their success led to the establishment of Biomatter in 2018, which has since collaborated with major biotech companies like Kirin and ArcticZymes Technologies to create essential nutrients for infant health and improved enzymes for vaccines.
With the enzyme market projected to grow from €10 billion in 2025 to €15 billion by 2034, the need for sophisticated, next-generation solutions is increasingly clear. Their innovations align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, promoting health and innovation.
Karpus emphasizes the importance of a proactive mindset, urging younger generations to embrace the possibilities of innovation: “The future is what you make of it.” Biomatter’s work signals a promising leap towards a more sustainable future through advanced enzyme technology.
