Tension in Rhode Island Senate Over Assault Weapons Ban Bill
In a contentious session, Rhode Island legislators faced a pivotal moment regarding the proposed ban on assault-style weapons, which had narrowly passed in the House with a 43-28 vote. Democratic Senator Julie Lauria expressed frustration over the committee assignment, arguing it undermines the Senate’s opportunity for a full public debate. “This practice is detrimental to addressing one of the most significant public safety issues of our time,” she stated. Conversely, Senate Minority Whip Gordon E. Rogers viewed Lauria’s procedural motion as untimely, reflecting deeper political divisions within the chamber.
The tension escalated when former Senate Majority Leader Ryan W. Pearson contested Lauria’s motion, asserting that it was within Senate rules for her to attempt redirecting the bill to the Finance Committee, where it might receive more favorable attention. After a vote, however, the Senate upheld the ruling that Lauria’s motion was out of order, further clouding the future of the proposed legislation.
Despite garnering strong support—with 24 out of 37 senators as cosponsors—Lauria warned that the bill’s chances could be significantly diminished if left in the Judiciary Committee. Senate President Val Lawson and new Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III both denied claims that promises were made to conservative senators to let the bill die.
Melissa Carden, executive director of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence, voiced her disappointment but remained hopeful about future avenues to advance the bill, emphasizing the ongoing urgency to address gun violence in the state.
