Ex-White House Doctor Set to Testify Before House Panel on Biden’s Mental Fitness

Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the former White House physician who treated President Joe Biden, is set to provide a transcribed interview for the House Oversight Committee on July 9, following a subpoena led by Rep. James Comer, R-Ky. This investigation centers on claims regarding Biden’s cognitive decline, notably his use of an autopen for official matters. O’Connor’s testimony could be pivotal in the committee’s efforts to support allegations that Biden’s reduced capacity influenced critical decisions made by others.

In addition to O’Connor, former White House aides Neera Tanden, Anthony Bernal, Ashley Williams, and Annie Tomasini have also agreed to interviews, albeit without subpoenas. However, the Oversight Committee has not yet presented tangible evidence to substantiate its claims about Biden’s mental fitness and decision-making.

Regarding the use of the autopen, a 2005 memo from the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel deemed the practice legal. A federal appeals court ruling in 2024 underscored that a lack of written evidence does not negate the legality of such actions. Biden has firmly stated that he has been the one making decisions during his presidency, and former aides have consistently denied claims that he delegated authority. One unnamed former official asserted that any suggestion of Biden not making decisions is unfounded, emphasizing that he was responsible for pardons, executive orders, and laws passed.

Additionally, the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee has shown interest in investigating Biden’s mental capabilities, holding a public hearing on the matter last week. However, the witness list did not include individuals with direct knowledge of Biden’s mental fitness while in office.
