Bishop Lewandowski Celebrates Mass for Special Needs Community in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (OSV News) — In a heartfelt Mass at St. Patrick Church, Bishop Bruce A. Lewandowski extended hope and recognition to individuals with special needs, emphasizing their inherent worth in the eyes of God. Reflecting on the societal challenges they face, the bishop reminded attendees, “You are the greatest thing that God ever did,” reinforcing that their existence praises and honors God.
Irma I. Rodriguez, director of the Special Religious Education Program (SPRED), noted the program’s longstanding commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities, initiated in the 1960s by Msgr. Gerard O. Sabourin. She highlighted the importance of community and the desire for greater participation in church life, stating, “Our people with disabilities and their families carry big crosses.”
Program catechist Victor Perez expressed gratitude for the bishop’s presence, emphasizing the unique way they teach children to love Christ. Father Joseph Brice, pastor of St. Patrick, echoed the significance of Bishop Lewandowski’s visit, praising his compassionate leadership.
The evening concluded with celebratory receptions, honoring both Msgr. Sabourin’s 65 years of priesthood and the enduring mission of the SPRED program.
