Pawtucket Fans Celebrate History at McCoy Stadium Time Capsule Reveal

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A nostalgic atmosphere enveloped McCoy Stadium on Monday as PawSox fans gathered to witness the unveiling of two time capsules, four years after the team moved to Worcester.

Among the treasures was memorabilia from the longest game in professional baseball history, which occurred 44 years ago to the very day. This capsule contained valuable items such as a program, hats, scorecards, and signed baseballs commemorating the epic 33-inning showdown on June 23, 1981. Former PawSox pitcher Jim Dorsey, who played during that historic game, was in attendance. Fans recalled the night vividly; one spectator shared how a friend was surprised to find the stadium lights still on in the early morning hours when the marathon game continued.

The second time capsule featured artifacts from the stadium’s 1940 inauguration, including a copper box and an official letter signed by the stadium’s namesake, Thomas McCoy. For many, seeing these pieces of PawSox history stirred emotional memories of community and friendship, as attendees reminisced about the warmth of the stadium atmosphere. Even a younger generation, who grew up with the PawSox, expressed gratitude for the memories made at their beloved home.
