Small Businesses Slow to Adopt AI, Yet One Firm Embraces Sherlock Holmes to Eliminate ‘Grunt Work’

Chris Schwegmann, a lawyer at Lynn Pinker Hurst & Schwegmann in Dallas, is innovatively applying artificial intelligence (AI) in legal practice by utilizing platforms like Harvey to enhance problem-solving ability. By channeling the perspectives of legal figures such as Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts or even fictional characters like Sherlock Holmes, he encourages creative thinking beyond traditional legal frameworks. Schwegmann believes that this approach leads to unique ideas that can be structured appropriately to address legal challenges.

Despite AI’s potential, a recent National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) survey indicates that only 24% of small business owners currently employ AI tools, including ChatGPT and Canva, for various tasks. For those utilizing AI, the majority report no significant effect on employment levels; instead, AI is employed to automate routine tasks, freeing up lawyers to mentor junior staff and engage in more strategic tasks. Schwegmann’s firm, comprised of 50 attorneys, experiences significant advancements in efficiency, with tasks accomplished in days rather than weeks.

The NFIB survey highlighted that the adoption of AI significantly varies by business size. While only 21% of firms with a few employees use AI, nearly half of larger firms with 50 or more employees have adopted the technology. Looking ahead, 63% of small business owners believe that AI will be vital to their operations in the next five years, particularly in communications, marketing, and customer service.

Schwegmann asserts that AI is not a replacement for legal professionals but an augmentation of their capabilities, enabling them to think more creatively and address client needs more effectively. Overall, he emphasizes that AI facilitates a level playing field in legal practice, empowering smaller firms against larger competitors.
