Thousands Rally in Rhode Island to Protest President Trump on Flag Day

PROVIDENCE, RI – On Saturday, a vibrant crowd of 3,000 to 4,000 Rhode Islanders gathered at the Statehouse, united in their dissent against President Trump. The protests coincided with a national day of action themed “No Kings” and served as a platform for voices of concern regarding the President’s policies.

Organizer Lauren DelSignore emphasized the movement’s inclusivity, advocating for unity among various demographics to address pressing issues such as immigration, healthcare, and veterans’ rights. “We want people to come together from all backgrounds,” she stated, underscoring the solidarity essential to their message.

Among the sea of colorful signs and impassioned chants was Rick Whalen, a protester reflecting on family history. He expressed deep concerns for the direction of democracy under Trump’s leadership, stating, “This is not the kind of democracy that they lived for or fought for.”

The protests coincided with Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C., honoring Flag Day and the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, marking his 79th birthday. Meanwhile, speakers at the Statehouse criticized GOP initiatives aimed at cutting Medicaid and food assistance, while participants lamented ICE’s immigration raids.

Debbie and Chad Beringer of Providence showcased a “rage quilt,” crafted by Debbie in just two days. The quilt, intended to symbolize the nation’s distress, was emblazoned with the quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

Paul Leclerc, another protester, argued that the current political landscape is a crisis, stressing the need for increased public awareness and involvement. The protests underscored a resolute message: Rhode Islanders are determined to voice their discontent and call for action amidst what they perceive as a troubling political climate.
