Two Drown in Smithfield Waters in Tragic Incidents
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — Authorities confirm two drownings occurred on Tuesday in separate incidents at local water bodies. Deputy Chief Steven Quattrini of the Smithfield Fire Department reported the recovery of a 31-year-old man’s body from Georgiaville Pond just before 10 p.m.
The victim, a Providence resident, was swimming with friends when he was reported missing. Divers from Smithfield and Cumberland located his body approximately 25 feet from shore in 40 feet of water after about 20 minutes of searching. Quattrini remarked on the unprecedented nature of having back-to-back drownings in his 35-year career.
Earlier on the same evening, a swimmer’s body was retrieved from Sunset Cove in Lincoln Woods State Park. Quattrini noted that beach closures and lack of lifeguard supervision were emphasized in postings at the locations. The dive team initially deployed for Lincoln Woods was redirected to Georgiaville Pond, which aided in the rapid response.
Smithfield police are treating both incidents as accidental drownings and are requesting anyone with information to contact them at 401-231-2500. Community safety messages have been reinforced in light of these tragic events.
