Czech Police Arrest Five Teens for Online Radicalization Linked to Islamic State

Czech Authorities Detain Five Teenagers for Online Radicalisation Ties to Islamic State

Brno, Czech Republic — June 25, 2025

Czech Republic authorities have detained five teenagers for alleged radicalisation linked to the Islamic State (IS) militant group, two of whom face charges related to a failed arson attack on a synagogue. The youths, mostly under 18, were apprehended between February and June as part of an international investigation initiated last year.

On January 29, 2024, two of the detained individuals attempted to ignite a firebomb outside a synagogue in Brno, the country’s second-largest city. Local reports indicated that the device failed to detonate. The charges against them include hate crimes, promotion of terrorism, and an attempted terror attack.

Břetislav Brejcha, director of the Czech counterterrorism department, confirmed that the teenagers had been active in online groups dedicated to recruiting fighters for IS in Syria. Cooperation with law enforcement agencies from Austria, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, and Europol facilitated the investigation, leading to seven police raids across the Czech Republic and Austria. These operations resulted in the confiscation of various weapons, including knives and machetes.

Michal Koudelka, head of the Czech counterintelligence agency BIS, noted the suspects harbored extreme views rooted in hostility towards Jews and LGBTQ+ individuals, highlighting the dangers of online radicalisation among youth. He emphasized that the detained teenagers had not engaged with the local Muslim community, underscoring the isolated nature of their online influences.

Koudelka described the phenomenon as a "very dangerous trend" that poses significant risks to society, sparking renewed concerns over the impact of digital radicalisation on young minds in the region.
