Protests Erupt in Kenya as Citizens Mark Deadly Anniversary of Tax Protests
Thousands of Kenyans took to the streets in Nairobi to commemorate the one-year anniversary of violent protests that left at least 60 people dead during youth-led demonstrations against proposed tax hikes. Last year, widespread unrest erupted in response to escalating economic hardships, particularly affecting young people, leading to deadly confrontations with security forces.
Activists, along with family members of the victims, organized peaceful rallies to demand accountability and honor those lost during last year’s demonstrations. In a statement, Western embassies urged Kenya to facilitate peaceful protests and refrain from violence while condemning the presence of unmarked police officers that incite distrust among demonstrators. The Foreign Affairs Ministry acknowledged concerns over policing and asserted that violations would be addressed through proper governmental channels.
President Ruto’s administration, facing growing disillusionment amid stagnant economic conditions and high taxes, has attempted to avoid further tax increases this year. However, many young people are frustrated, fearing a return to oppressive governance reminiscent of past dictatorships, as reports of government critics disappearing continue to surface. Ruto, while pledging support for the police, warned protesters against using force or threats, underscoring the tension surrounding Kenya’s socio-political landscape.
