Catholic Athletic League Celebrates 90 Years with Hall of Fame Gala
PROVIDENCE — In a significant milestone, the Catholic Athletic League (CAL) is gearing up to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2025. Marking this momentous occasion, CAL will host its inaugural gala on October 18, during which it will induct members into a newly established Hall of Fame. This event not only honors the individuals who have shaped the league since its inception as the Catholic Youth Organization in 1935 but also serves to raise funds for its ongoing mission.
Ben Gorewitz, the current CAL director, emphasizes the importance of recognizing those foundational figures who contributed to youth sports within the diocese. “I wanted to find a way to honor those who have made the league what it is today,” he stated.
The Hall of Fame aims to celebrate the dedication of athletes, coaches, officials, and clergy whose efforts have impacted both CAL and the broader community. Nominees must be practicing Catholics involved in CAL as coaches, administrators, or athletes, among others. Evaluation criteria include the duration of participation, positive impact, and ongoing contributions to the Church stemming from CAL involvement.
Currently, the league encompasses around 40 schools and parishes, serving approximately 1,200 children. CAL’s rich history includes a notable growth in participation during its early years, particularly in basketball, which became a cornerstone of the program. Challenges like World War II tested the league’s resilience, yet it continued to adapt and thrive.
As CAL looks ahead, Gorewitz hopes to raise awareness among youth about the various sports opportunities available, ensuring the league’s enduring legacy continues to inspire future generations. Nominations for the Hall of Fame can be submitted through the CAL website until March 31.
