Labor Leaders Reflect on LGBTQ+ Rights and Union Inclusion in Rhode Island
As the fight for LGBTQ+ rights continues, Karen Hazard, president of the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council, reflects on her journey from a new organizer in the mid-1990s to a leader advocating for inclusivity within labor unions. Initially unable to discuss pension benefits with prospective members due to her own family’s exclusion, Hazard engaged union leadership to redefine “family.” Her efforts led to the inclusion of partners in pension plans, paving the way for others in similar situations.
In 2001, the state enacted a domestic partnership law, marking a significant step, albeit incomplete, for LGBTQ+ workers. Denise Robinson, president of IFPTE Local 400, experienced the complications firsthand, navigating a complicated benefits landscape at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. This highlighted the need for unions to actively communicate rights and benefits to their members.
The campaign for marriage equality, which culminated in 2013, showcased powerful solidarity from unions. Leaders, including those from the building trades, publicly supported same-sex marriage, emphasizing labor’s pivotal role in advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.
Today, under the Trump administration, LGBTQ+ protections face ongoing threats, with labor movements drawing battle lines against anti-union actions and discriminatory policies. Both Hazard and Robinson emphasize their pride in being part of a labor movement that champions equality.
This Pride Month, they celebrate not only their identities as queer individuals but also their dedication to ensuring that every worker feels a sense of belonging and protection through their unions. Their commitment to inclusivity reflects ongoing battles that strive to uphold the rights and dignity of all workers in Rhode Island and beyond.
