Johnston High School Hosts Annual Rhode Island Football Academy Camp

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — The Rhode Island Football Academy is hosting its annual camp this week at Johnston High School, bringing together young players aged 6 to 18 to learn the fundamentals of football. Founded by Paul Sylvia in 2003, the camp focuses on the essentials of the game rather than schemes or coverages. "If you get the fundamentals down, when you insert the scheme, the two are going to come together nicely," Sylvia stated.

The camp has expanded this year to include girls flag football, which is on the verge of being sanctioned in Rhode Island. Johnston junior Bella Nunes expressed excitement at being part of this pioneering effort, noting the unity among players regardless of gender. Sylvia praised the athleticism of the girls, emphasizing a bright future for girls’ flag football.

Participants are already noticing improvements in their skills. Johnston senior Nate Dellamorte remarked on the noticeable progress from Monday to Wednesday, urging the importance of such camps to prepare for the upcoming season. "It’s really important because it can help you learn football the right way," he added, reflecting the camp’s mission.
