UNAP Local 5098 Members Approve Strike Authorization at Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s Hospital

Press Release: Strike Authorization Vote at Rhode Island Hospital

Providence, RI – The United Nurses and Allied Professionals (UNAP) Local 5098, representing healthcare workers at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, voted on Tuesday to authorize a strike. The union urges Brown University Health to negotiate a contract that respects nurses and patients alike.

Frank Sims, President of UNAP Local 5098, stated, “The overwhelming vote reflects our commitment to dignity and respect. The current contract proposal from Brown University is unacceptable.” Sims emphasized that healthcare professionals are tired of feeling undervalued, leading many to seek employment in neighboring states where they are appreciated.

The negotiations have highlighted major issues, including insufficient safety protections, lack of affordable health insurance, and inadequate wages. Brown University Health’s proposal, which shifts $1 million in increased insurance costs onto workers, has drawn particular ire, as it translates to over $1,000 per member, straining healthcare workers financially.

“The ball is in their court,” added Sims. He called for a serious proposal, stating that inadequate contracts will worsen Rhode Island’s nursing shortage and threaten patient care quality. The UNAP is prepared to take further action if their demands are not met.
