Rhode Island’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to Keep “Press 3” Option for LGBTQ+ Youth

Press Release: Changes to the 988 Lifeline and Support for LGBTQ+ Youth in Rhode Island

Effective July 17, 2025, the federal government will eliminate the "Press 3" option from the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which connected LGBTQ+ youth to specialized crisis counselors through The Trevor Project and other centers. Despite this national change, Rhode Island’s 988 services will continue to operate effectively, ensuring full access for all individuals, including LGBTQ+ youth and adults.

A 2024 National Survey highlights concerning statistics, revealing that nearly 40% of LGBTQ+ young people have contemplated suicide in the past year. Rhode Island’s commitment to serving the community with dignity and respect remains steadfast, advocating for crisis systems that cater to all residents.

The "Press 1" option for the Veterans Crisis Line and "Press 2" for Spanish support will still be available. If you or someone you know is facing emotional distress or a mental health crisis, you can reach out by calling or texting 988 or visiting 988lifeline.org for support from trained counselors.

Furthermore, contrary to misinformation circulating on social media, no new Canadian crisis hotline for LGBTQ+ Americans has been established. Rhode Island encourages individuals to utilize the locally available 988 line for immediate support.
