In a groundbreaking move, Ibn-Hashim Bakari, a Rhode Islander, proposed repurposing confiscated nuisance dirt bikes and ATVs to benefit the Dominican Republic through his organization, Lights & Sirens International. Despite initial doubts about corruption and lack of public service, Bakari successfully coordinated the transport of 17 dirt bikes and four ATVs to Santo Domingo, the capital city, with the support of Cranston and Providence officials and the Dominican National Police.
An international agreement ensured the machines would be used by Dominican police, who paid for the shipment. Due to the lack of ownership papers, police reports were provided instead. Bakari’s close communication with Col. Roberto Lerebours of the Dominican National Police expedited the process. Lerebours expressed gratitude for the much-needed equipment, which will be painted with police markings and numbered for tracking purposes.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez, who assisted in the collaboration, discussed the practical benefits of ATVs and dirt bikes for police officers in rugged terrains. While despised by thrill-seeking miscreants in Providence and Cranston, these confiscated vehicles will be utilized effectively in the Dominican Republic.
The successful transportation of the machines marked a significant milestone in cross-cultural cooperation and aid efforts between Rhode Islanders and Dominicans. Bakari’s innovative idea has not only repurposed seized equipment but has also strengthened ties between law enforcement agencies in different countries. The positive reception in Santo Domingo underscores the potential for repurposing discarded items for the greater good.
