Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate in Rhode Island has remained stagnant at 7.1% in February. This comes as a surprise to many experts who were expecting a slight decrease following the gradual reopening of businesses and the distribution of vaccines.
According to data from the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, the state’s labor force increased by 600 individuals in February, reaching a total of 550,800. However, the number of employed individuals also increased by 5,700, totaling 511,000. This means that the increase in employment was offset by the rise in the labor force, resulting in no change in the unemployment rate.
The largest job gains in Rhode Island were seen in the construction and leisure and hospitality sectors, which added a total of 2,400 jobs. The healthcare and social assistance sector also saw an increase of 1,300 jobs, while the retail trade sector experienced a decline of 1,800 jobs.
Despite these fluctuations in job numbers, the overall unemployment rate has remained steady, indicating that Rhode Island’s economy is still facing challenges in its recovery from the pandemic. Many residents are still struggling to find employment, especially in industries that have been hit the hardest by the crisis.
As the state continues its efforts to vaccinate more residents and reopen businesses, it is hoped that the unemployment rate will start to decrease in the coming months. However, it is clear that Rhode Island still has a long way to go before fully recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic.
