Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal faced a tough test in their Champions League opener against Atalanta after a disjointed performance that highlighted their dependence on captain Martin Ødegaard. Despite being outplayed at times, the Gunners managed to secure a point thanks to a miraculous double save from goalkeeper David Raya. Gabriel Martinelli missed a golden opportunity to snatch victory late in the game, leaving Arteta relieved to leave Italy with a draw.
Facing a formidable Atalanta side in the midst of their fourth Champions League campaign was always going to be a challenge for Arsenal. The home fans put on a show before kick-off, but it was Kai Havertz who made an early impact with a chance that was saved by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. Atalanta grew into the game, but Raya’s heroics kept them at bay.
The match took a turn when Thomas Partey conceded a penalty early in the second half, only for Raya to deny Mateo Retegui twice to keep the scores level. Despite making changes, Arsenal struggled to regain control, with Atalanta coming close to scoring through Juan Cuadrado. An opportunity for Martinelli went begging as the game ended in a draw, leaving Arsenal bruised but still unbeaten in Europe this season.
Arteta will have plenty to ponder as Arsenal face Manchester City next, knowing that improvements are needed if they are to continue their promising start to the season.
