South Korea displayed its powerful ballistic missile, the Hyunmoo-5, during an annual military parade, showcasing the country’s readiness to counter North Korean threats. President Yoon Suk-yeol warned North Korea that any use of nuclear weapons would be met with a strong response from the South Korea-US alliance. Yoon has prioritized strengthening the military alliance with the US and promoting cooperation with Washington and Tokyo.
The Hyunmoo-5, dubbed a “monster missile” by media, is capable of carrying an 8-tonne warhead and can penetrate deep into the earth to destroy underground bunkers in North Korea. The missile is part of South Korea’s “three-axis” defense system to neutralize North Korea’s nuclear threats.
The parade also featured a flypast by a US B-1B strategic bomber, emphasizing the strong alliance between South Korea and the US. North Korea criticized the display of military strength and accused the US of engaging in provocative actions, such as sending a nuclear-powered submarine to South Korea.
The Hyunmoo-5 was successfully tested last year and is a key component of South Korea’s defense strategy. Despite North Korea’s continued weapons testing and defiance of international sanctions, South Korea remains prepared to respond to any provocations. The military parade demonstrated South Korea’s commitment to peace through strength and its determination to protect its security against North Korean threats.
