Former President Trump’s campaign calls for increased military protection for his security

The Trump campaign has requested additional security measures similar to those provided to a sitting president due to increased threats against former President Donald Trump’s life. Susie Wiles, Trump campaign co-manager, reached out to White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients to ask for military assets like armored cars and protection while flying. Zients connected Wiles with DHS and Secret Service leadership. The campaign also requested special forces protection, denied by a source who claimed the Secret Service requested special operations forces to thwart potential drone attacks. Trump has faced assassination attempts and threats, leading to a change in campaign tactics. Rep. Mike Waltz requested access to planes to detect threats, but the requests have not been addressed. The Secret Service claims Trump is receiving the highest level of protection, including enhanced communication capabilities and other security measures. The Pentagon and Secret Service are concerned about violating federal laws by providing more assets. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved increased support for candidates with help from U.S. Northern Command, including explosive experts and technicians to detect threats. Overall, Trump is receiving the same level of protection as President Joe Biden, and the campaign should not expect more.
