Police Charge Man Posing as Utility Worker with Murder in Home Invasion, Search for Second Suspect

A man posing as a utility worker in Michigan has been charged with murdering a man in a gruesome attack and tying up his wife. Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, was caught on camera asking for entry to a house in Rochester Hills claiming to be from a local energy company. He was arrested in Louisiana and charged with murder and unlawful imprisonment. The victim, Hussein Murray, 72, was found dead in the basement with his wrists and ankles duct-taped. Hernandez and another man searched the house for money and valuables, duct-taping the wife’s wrists and ankles and hitting her across the face when she screamed. The wife managed to call 911 and raise the alarm. The suspects were targeting the house, as the couple owned a jewelry and pawn shop in Detroit. DTE Energy warned against imposters, advising residents to ask for photo ID and call DTE to verify the credentials of any workers. Oakland County prosecutors have authorized the highest charges for the brutal crime, resulting in a possible life sentence for Hernandez. The manhunt continues for the second suspect seen in the doorbell camera footage. The incident was described as a gruesome attack on an elderly couple in their home, with the case highlighting the importance of verifying the identity of utility workers to prevent such tragic events.
