A 24-year-old hiker was found dead along the Marufo Vega Trail in Big Bend National Park in Texas after rangers launched a search when they noticed a vehicle parked for several days at a trailhead. The rugged 14-mile trail is known for its desert areas and lack of shade or water, making it dangerous during warmer times of the year. The body was removed by helicopter and the hiker’s identity was not disclosed by the National Park Service. Temperatures in the desert parts of the park have been reaching almost 100 degrees, despite it being late October. Deputy Superintendent Rick Gupman expressed condolences to the hiker’s family and friends, and stated that the park staff are saddened by the loss. The park service cautioned visitors to be aware of the extreme temperatures in the area, especially in the desert regions of the park.
