Game Notes for Men’s Basketball Match against UMass

The Providence College men’s basketball team will be hosting UMass in a charity exhibition game on October 26 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. The game will benefit the Rhode Island Free Clinic and Baystate Children’s Hospital. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since December 2018, with the Friars holding a historical advantage of 25-9 over the Minutemen. This charity game was approved by an NCAA waiver to raise funds for various causes.

The Friars have a strong record in exhibition games, with a 67-23 overall record including a win in a previous charity exhibition game against UConn. The team will also be opening the 2024-25 season against Central Connecticut and will be playing national television games on CBS, NBC, and FOX for the first time ever. Senior Bryce Hopkins has been named to the Preseason First Team All-BIG EAST for the second consecutive year.

Coach Kim English led the team to a 21-14 record in his first year at PC, and the team has sold out season tickets for the second consecutive year. The Friars will also be hosting the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Tournament in 2025. Overall, the program has a solid history, with 22 NCAA Tournament appearances and 21 NIT appearances since its inception in 1926.

Newcomers to the team this season include guard Wesley Cardet and forward Christ Essandoko, among others. The Friars are looking forward to another successful season as they aim to continue their winning tradition on the court while giving back to the community through charity games like the upcoming exhibition against UMass.
