Senegal Holds Elections as President Faye Aims for Parliamentary Majority to Drive Reforms | Election Updates

Senegal’s parliamentary elections have begun with more than seven million eligible voters keen on jobs and rising prices in mind. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who won power on a platform of economic reform and anti-corruption promises, is seeking a strong majority to push through his ambitious agenda.

Faye, who dissolved the National Assembly in September, appointed his mentor Ousmane Sonko as prime minister, with the duo promising left-wing pan-African policies. With opposition parties hindering the government’s efforts, Faye called for snap elections to secure a supportive parliament.

Senegalese voters historically confirm their presidential pick during parliamentary elections, making Faye’s party the favorite in this election. However, an alliance of opposition parties, including one led by former President Macky Sall, poses a challenge to Faye’s ambitions.

Economic challenges, including a widening budget deficit and a looming debt crisis, have added pressure on the new government. The delay in an IMF program due to a government audit is also impacting the country’s financial stability.

Despite the challenges and delays in fulfilling campaign promises, Senegalese trailblazer Mariam Wane Ly believes the election campaign will provide an opportunity for leaders to articulate their visions. She expects Faye’s party to secure the majority it seeks, potentially restoring hope and addressing voter concerns.
