In an interview with Sky News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that the war in Ukraine could end if the country’s unoccupied parts are taken “under the NATO umbrella”. He emphasized that the NATO invitation should recognize Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders. Zelensky responded to reports that US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to end the war might involve Kyiv giving up land taken by Russia in exchange for NATO membership.
Zelenskyy stated that parts of Ukraine under his control would need to be offered NATO membership for the “hot phase of the war” to end. He stressed the need for a ceasefire deal to ensure that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not re-engage. While NATO has not officially made an offer to Ukraine yet, Zelenskyy believes that NATO should immediately cover all regions under Kyiv’s control.
He also highlighted the importance of working with President Trump, who will take office in January 2025, to gain support in ending the war. Zelenskyy expressed his desire to work directly with Trump and not allow others around him to disrupt communication. Trump had previously pledged to end the Ukraine war during his election campaign.
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s goal to end the war with Russia through diplomatic means by 2025. He emphasized the need for NATO’s support in recognizing Ukraine’s borders and offering membership to regions under Ukrainian control. The Ukrainian president’s comments underscore the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict and seek international assistance to achieve peace.
