Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, has announced that Cairo is actively working on a plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing its population. This plan is in response to US President Donald Trump’s proposal to take over Gaza and relocate its residents, which has been heavily criticized internationally. Egypt’s plan is designed to counter Trump’s logic and ensure that the geographic and demographic structure of Gaza remains unchanged.
The reconstruction plan will involve establishing secure areas within Gaza where Palestinians can live during the rebuilding process. The plan will be carried out in three phases over a period of five years, with the first phase expected to begin after an emergency Arab summit in Cairo later this month. The reconstruction effort will provide jobs to Gaza’s population and allow humanitarian aid to flow into the territory.
Egypt has also discussed financing options with European diplomats and Arab partners such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. There is a possibility of an international conference on Gaza’s reconstruction in the future.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains committed to Trump’s plan for a different Gaza, which would involve the voluntary departure of Palestinians from the enclave. Israel’s Defence Minister has announced plans to establish a special directorate for this purpose, offering extensive assistance to any Gaza resident who wants to emigrate to a third state.
Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, has expressed willingness to give up power, either in favor of a Palestinian unity government or a committee of technocrats to govern the enclave. The situation in Gaza remains complex, with multiple international actors involved in shaping its future.
