Tech billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has reaffirmed that he will not cut off Ukraine’s access to internet service despite disagreements with Kyiv. This comes after a heated exchange between Musk, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski over the use of Musk’s Starlink internet service in Ukraine, which is funded by Poland to help repel Russia’s invasion.
Sikorski had suggested that Poland might have to seek alternative suppliers if Starlink proves to be unreliable, prompting Musk to defend the importance of his satellite network for Ukraine’s military. Rubio also came to Musk’s defense, denying any threats to cut off Ukraine from Starlink and emphasizing its crucial role in the conflict.
Despite tensions, Musk insisted that Starlink will not be turned off for Ukraine and clarified that the service is vital as the Russian military could jam other communications channels. The terminals provided by Starlink have been essential for Ukraine’s military and services following Russia’s destruction of communication networks during the invasion.
Meanwhile, Trump’s administration has paused military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, with the possibility of resuming if diplomatic progress is made. Trump expressed optimism for talks with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia and aims to secure a ceasefire and peace agreement. US officials are set to meet with the Ukrainian delegation to work towards ending the conflict.
