Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has ordered an investigation into politically motivated leaks from the intelligence community, as well as probing internal chat rooms for misconduct. Gabbard stated that unauthorized leaks undermine national security and trust in the American people and will not be tolerated. She cited recent examples of leaks to news outlets such as HuffPost, The Washington Post, and NBC News. Gabbard emphasized that any unauthorized release of classified information is a violation of the law and will be treated as such.
During former President Donald Trump’s administration, there was a significant increase in criminal investigations of media leaks. Gabbard’s focus on investigating leaks comes after senators questioned her at her confirmation hearing about her past praise for Edward Snowden, who leaked NSA secrets. Gabbard had previously praised Snowden as a whistleblower, but later stated that he broke the law and would not seek a pardon for him.
In addition to investigating leaks, Gabbard announced an investigation into misconduct and unprofessional behavior in internal chat rooms within intelligence agencies. She recently fired over 100 intelligence officers for engaging in inappropriate discussions related to topics such as polyamory, gender transition surgery, and politics. Gabbard described their behavior as a violation of trust and professionalism standards. Gabbard aims to restore trust in intelligence agencies and prevent misuse of their services as political weapons.
