Thank Goodness It’s Friday: Ian Donnis’ Recap of Rhode Island Politics on Nov. 8, 2024

The 2024 election in Rhode Island resulted in a split-screen outcome, with General Assembly incumbents mostly successful, a Republican gain in the House and a potential GOP loss in the Senate pending a recount. The state, known for its Democratic super-majority, surprisingly saw a wave of support for Donald Trump, who won 42% of the vote. State Rep. Megan Cotter, who won a key legislative race, attributed her victory to a community coalition and focusing on local issues. Meanwhile, political strategist Jeff Britt, now in Buenos Aires, cited concerns about a potential second Trump presidency. The GOP’s takeover of the Senate means changes for U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, while Senate President Dominick Ruggerio faces challenges from within his own party. Key issues in the election included the economy, housing, and the importance of reaching working-class voters. Despite Biden’s victory, his administration’s economic policies are transforming the country for the better but were overshadowed by voters’ economic anxiety. Notably, House Speaker Joe Shekarchi claimed victory in a housing-related issue in Narragansett despite not having an opponent. The election also brought an increase in revenue for local TV stations due to political ads. Voter turnout heavily influenced decisions on housing initiatives and a proposed Constitutional Convention, which ultimately did not pass.
