Nirva LaFortune, a prominent figure in Rhode Island politics, first made her mark in 2017 when she won a special election to represent Ward 3 on the East Side of the Providence City Council. As the first Haitian-American to hold political office in the state, she brought a fresh perspective to the table. Now, five years later, LaFortune is the executive director of City Year Providence, a nonprofit organization that recruits young adults for a year of service in Providence schools.
Last year, 24 Americorps members from City Year Providence served full-time in six city schools, impacting thousands of students.
