American rapper and music producer Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has been accused in a civil lawsuit of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000. The lawsuit also implicates hip-hop star Sean “Diddy” Combs in the alleged assault. The updated civil complaint filed on Sunday claims that the two celebrities assaulted the girl at an afterparty following the MTV Video Music Awards. The plaintiff in the case has not been identified.
Jay-Z vehemently denied the allegations, calling it a “blackmail attempt” by the lawyer representing the alleged victim. He accused the lawyer, Tony Buzbee, of being a “deplorable human” and rejected the notion of settling the case. The billionaire musician stated that the allegations were so heinous that a criminal complaint should be filed, rather than a civil one.
Combs, who is facing separate charges of sex trafficking and racketeering and has pleaded not guilty, has also been implicated in the lawsuit. The lawyer representing the alleged victim stated that she had not demanded any money from Jay-Z and only sought a confidential mediation.
The case against Jay-Z and Combs is a serious matter that will be litigated in court, according to Buzbee. The criminal trial against Combs is scheduled to begin in 2025, with federal prosecutors alleging that he sexually abused women at drug-fuelled sex parties. Combs is also facing multiple other lawsuits from alleged victims.
