WhatsApp alleges that the spyware company Paragon Solutions has been targeting journalists.

Around 90 users of WhatsApp are suspected to have been targeted in a spyware campaign by Israeli spyware company Paragon Solutions, with journalists and civil society members among those affected across over two dozen countries in Europe. The company used a malicious PDF file sent through groups as a vector to access networks, but WhatsApp claims to have successfully disrupted this vector and has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Paragon Solutions. The affected users have been notified and provided with information on protecting themselves from spyware. Francesco Cancellato, editor-in-chief of an Italian online newspaper, was one of the journalists targeted in the attack. The spyware campaign was tracked with the help of Citizen Lab, a cybersecurity research lab, and John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher, explained the capabilities of such spyware. WhatsApp previously worked with Citizen Lab in a lawsuit against NSO Group, a surveillance firm, and in December, a U.S. judge ruled in favor of WhatsApp. Paragon Solutions, now owned by AE Industrial Partners, is believed to still operate in Israel. Natalia Krapiva from Access Now warns that attacks on journalists and civil society are becoming common and calls for more action from lawmakers and the tech sector to regulate the surveillance industry.
