State Rep. Enrique Sanchez, a Providence Democrat, is facing misdemeanor charges for drunk driving after being arrested early Monday morning by Cranston Police. The 28-year-old lawmaker was arraigned in Kent County District Court and charged with driving under the influence and refusing to take a sobriety test. Sanchez was pulled over after police noticed him stopped at a green light and exhibiting signs of intoxication. Body camera footage shows officers noting a strong smell of alcohol and Sanchez’s confused behavior. Despite initially denying drinking, Sanchez later admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the night and taking Adderall for ADHD. He refused a breathalyzer test at the police station and was held until his court arraignment. House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi stated that the charge is serious and that Sanchez owes an explanation to his colleagues and constituents. Sanchez, known for his progressive views and previous run-in with police in 2023, did not attend House sessions following the arrest. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Feb. 24.
