A winter downpour in Los Angeles led to mudslides over Mulholland Drive and prompted evacuations in areas affected by recent wildfires. The heavy rain caused an emergency flash flood warning for the Palisades Fire burn scar, but all flood warnings were canceled by 8 p.m. Evacuation orders were issued for the Pacific Palisades area, as well as for areas near the Eaton Fire and other burn scars until Friday afternoon. An SUV was swept into the ocean by a mudslide in Malibu, but the driver, a fire department member, only sustained minor injuries. Mandatory evacuations were also issued in Orange County and Ventura County due to mudslide concerns. Overall, 32 million people in California were under flood watches as heavy rain continued. Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 3 inches along the coast and in valleys, with higher terrain expecting up to 6 to 10 inches of rain. Despite the cancellation of flood warnings, the National Weather Service warned that mud and rockslides could still occur after the rain had ended.
